Opened in 2002, a spacious and spectacular Otter sanctuary with underwater viewing, allowing you to witness their graceful swimming up close. Fingal and Sula, the Sanctuary’s new residents, refugees from an overcrowded colony at an Essex wildlife park, will help raise awareness of conservation efforts on behalf of those native otters.
The new facility with its own holt, deep diving pool, streams and shallower pools has plenty to keep the two Otters occupied. Find out how our two Otters are getting on in our Otter Update section. Last updated in May 2007. |
| On Tuesday 20th August 2002, we officially opened Otter Creek, with the help of Terry Nutkins. Terry lost two fingers to an angry Otter when he was 15-years-old and a protégé of the late Ring of Bright Water author Gavin Maxwell, but this has failed to dampen Terry’s enthusiasm for otters. The Otters had decided to build a new holt under a tree, and we thought they would not come out to meet Terry, but Sula finally thought it was time to eat, and came out to be fed. Otter Creek has rivers cascading from the deep diving pool across the naturally landscaped enclosure through several open shallow pools giving a tremendous environment for these fascinating creatures. |
