CORNISH SEAL SANCTUARY MOURNS THE LOSS OF BELOVED RESIDENT - SHEBA

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Sheba, one of its most cherished residents, at the remarkable age of 51.
Affectionately known as the Queen of the Sanctuary, Sheba was a truly extraordinary grey seal who captured the hearts of staff, volunteers, and visitors alike for more than five decades. Her calm presence, gentle nature, and unmistakable character made her a true icon of the Sanctuary.

URGENT APPEAL TO FUND LIFE CHANGING EYE SURGERY FOR RESCUED SEAL PUP

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is currently caring for a young rescued grey seal pup named Abeona, who is preparing for surgery to remove a damaged eye following a serious injury.
Abeona was rescued by volunteers from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) on the 8th of October 2025 after being found on a beach near Newquay. She was underweight for her age and had her left eye completely shut, indicating a significant injury.

SANCTUARY URGES CARE AROUND SEAL PUPS AFTER SUSPECTED DOG BITE RESCUES

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is urging beachgoers to keep a safe distance from seal pups this October half term, after several of the sanctuary´s recent rescues arrived with injuries consistent with dog bites.
As the autumn rescue season continues, the team has already taken in a number of grey seal pups from around the Cornish coastline; many of them separated from their mothers or injured after being disturbed on beaches.

A SAD FAREWELL TO CLIFF

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our much-loved puffin, Cliff, who sadly died after a sudden illness on Friday 5th September 2025.
The animal care team at the Sanctuary, alongside the Rosevean veterinarian team, worked tirelessly to give Cliff the best care possible, but unfortunately, we lost Cliff to a very sudden and short illness. We are currently awaiting post-mortem results to understand the cause of his illness.

Every year, vulnerable seal pups are born on the beaches around Cornwall. While many will thrive under the care of their mothers, human disturbance poses one of the greatest threats to their survival.

As the Cornish Seal Sanctuary celebrates its 50th anniversary, they´ve been looking to the next generation of ocean heroes to help mark their incredible milestone.
The challenge set to primary school aged children, was to design a celebratory logo to highlight 50 years of rescue, rehabilitation and release of seals at the Sanctuary in Gweek, Cornwall.

As Cornwall sizzles in a summer heatwave, the Animal Care team at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary are pulling out all the stops to keep their animal residents cool; including some very special birds from a much colder climate.
Among the Sanctuary´s many residents are ten Icelandic rescue puffins, who are more accustomed to the brisk summer temperatures of their native home; typically between 10-13°C.

TINY SEAL PUPS ADMITTED TO CORNISH SEAL SANCTUARY AS RESCUE SEASON STARTS ALARMINGLY EARLY

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is caring for two critically ill grey seal pups; both rescued well before the expected start of pupping season, raising concern among marine conservationists about changing conditions along the Cornish coast.
One of the pups was flown in by helicopter from the Isles of Scilly, following an emergency response by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) and local authorities. Severely underweight at just over 12kg, with multiple injuries and signs of exhaustion, the pup is now being monitored closely in the Sanctuary´s seal hospital.

BRAVE SEAL PUP RETURNS TO THE WILD AFTER SUPPORTER HELP

A very special grey seal pup, Leaf Cutter, is making a triumphant return to the wild after receiving life-saving care at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, thanks to the generosity of supporters who funded her critical operation.
Leaf Cutter was rescued earlier this year after being found severely malnourished and suffering from a serious injury that required intricate veterinary attention. The dedicated team at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary provided round-the-clock care, and with the incredible support of the public, funds were raised to cover the costs of her vital flipper surgery.

A RARE GLIMPSE OF WINTER PUFFIN PLUMAGE AT THE CORNISH SEAL SANCTUARY

As the clocks in the UK go forward and spring approaches, nature is waking up, but at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, visitors have a rare opportunity to see something usually hidden from view : puffins in their winter plumage!
Puffins typically spend the colder months far out at sea, meaning their winter beaks are almost never seen by the public. However, thanks to the sanctuary´s rescued puffins, who call Puffin Island home, visitors can witness this fascinating seasonal transformation up close.

GPS-TAGGED SEAL PUP SPOTTED THRIVING IN THE WILD AFTER 600KM JOURNEY

A grey seal pup rehabilitated at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary has recently been spotted thriving in the wild two months after its release, showcasing incredible natural behaviours and resilience.
The rehabilitated pup was seen by James Savage and Peter Perkins, volunteers with the Seal Research Trust during a survey on the North coast of Cornwall.

CORNISH SEAL SANCTUARY SEAL PUP WAITING FOR FLIPPER-SAVING OPERATION

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary has launched an urgent fundraising appeal asking its supporters to help a little seal pup named "Leaf Cutter".
Leaf Cutter needs a lifesaving front flipper operation which will test the Sanctuary vet´s precision surgery skills. The operation is Leaf Cutter´s only chance of survival as she would sadly be unable to swim without a fully functioning front flipper.
