This is Brie, a male common seal pup. British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) volunteer marine mammal medics were called out to a Common seal pup at Lyme Regis, Devon on the 30th of August 2026. Brie was found to have a swollen muzzle and was dehydrated; he was slightly underweight with a few minor wounds. As the tide was coming in fast, the medics had to move quickly. The pup was taken to be checked at Coombefield Vet Hospital in Axminster before staying overnight locally where he was given some fluids, the next day Brie was taken to the Seal Sanctuary.

Brie is approximately 2 months old and should be double his current weight of 14kg. The team are keeping a really close eye on his upper left canine as there appeared to be a foreign particle wedged in his gum on arrival. This could be a possible source of infection and the reason for his swollen muzzle on rescue. Just to be safe, the vet has prescribed a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.
The first 24 hours of arrival in the hospital, Brie was given fluids to re-hydrate and is now being introduced to whole fish.

Update - 23rd September 2026 : Brie was moved down to the outside pools for his next stage of rehabilitation last week. This means he is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.
Pups in the pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild. These photos were taken on the 21st of September 2026.
Brie´s flipper tag ID number SL393 yellow.

How can you help?
Every year, tiny, vulnerable seal pups arrive at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary´s hospital needing specialist care, plenty of TLC and time to grow strong enough to return to the wild.
From their first days in our care to the moment they´re ready to swim free, as a sponsor your support is there every step of the way. Each seal pup costs us an average of £2,000 - £3,000 to rescue and rehabilitate, and some need even more specialist care.
By sponsoring a seal pup, you´ll become part of their journey and help provide the food, care and rehabilitation they need to get back where they belong, in the wild.
Choose from three sponsorship levels and help give a rescued seal pup the second chance they deserve.
