This pup was found by a local walking his dog along the shores of Falls of Lora, Connel. Considering that the weather has been particularly stormy for the last couple of days, this pup had most likely been separated from its mother and simply too exhausted to get back into the water and try to catch something to eat. Unfortunately, weak pups like this often become target for curious dogs or hungry birds. This particular pup was being attacked by a flock of crows and because it was too weak to fend for itself, they managed to cause it some damage. At the moment, this pup is on antibiotics to help it heal its wounds as well as to prevent any infection from entering its weak body.

This pup is probably something over a month old and this assumption is based on the fact that it doesn´t have its white baby coat anymore (shedding baby coat usually takes 2-3 weeks) and it has a nice set of sharp teeth. This pup might have also been weaned shortly before it was separated from its mother and thus introducing it to the whole fish might be quicker and easier. Because of its age and post-moult stage, we have skipped stages when we feed milk to pups.

For the first 24 hours the pup was tube fed rehydration fluid, then we have moved onto fish soup but the presence of its teeth suggests that it is ready for the whole fish. Between feeds we also leave a fish lying on the floor of its pen, so it can have a play with it, it can teach itself how to grab it and how to eat it. It is an important lesson for any pup.
