Pumpkin - Resident Grey Seal

Pumpkin was rescued in Guernsey by the GSPCA and was transferred to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary on the 18th of November 2010 for his next stage of rehabilitation and to learn how to compete for fish with other seals.
When Pumpkin arrived he was put into the rehabilitation pool with other rescued seal pups, Wellington and Ugg, he weighed 28k. Pumpkin is learning to feed himself and is on a diet of herring.

However, due to Pumpkin´s persistent bladder infection, the vets had advised that the Seal Sanctuary cannot release him back into the wild so he is now staying at the centre full time as permanent resident.

In October 2016 Pumpkin celebrated his 6th birthday with a fantastic ice-fish cake made by Natalie, Head of Enrichment and a member of the Animal Care Team.
Natalie decided to make Pumpkin a very special birthday cake, as it is Halloween and also his 6th Birthday, using ice, fish and food colouring to make it bright and colourful!

Pumpkin is a lively character who adores toys, especially during training sessions. Instead of following orders, he´d rather bring you a pool full of toys, proving that swimming and playing are way more fun than those tedious health checks.
When it´s snack time, Pumpkin isn´t shy about expressing his impatience with huffs and puffs, but it´s all worth it to see those fish appear a little quicker. Anything that isn´t toy-related can be met with a sceptical reaction - it´s all about the fun for Pumpkin!
