Titch arrived on 13th August 2005
Titch, rescued common seal pupThe British Divers Marine Life Rescue team in Thurso rescued Titch. She was found at John O'Groats, abandoned by her mother, on a beach. Due to the fact that the rescue centre in Thurso had no other rescued pups, it was felt that it would be better for her rehabilitation if she came here so that she could interact with other seals. After the long journey, Titch was very tired and hungry but otherwise ok. After a couple of hours to rest and settle in to her pen we offered her some fish.
When Titch arrived at the centre, she was 3 - 4 weeks old and weighed 9kg. The next day we examined Titch properly and she was completely healthy apart from being very skinny. She is now being fed three times a day and is putting on lots of weight. She has moved in to the weaning pool to learn to feed for herself underwater water. The next stage is when she moves outside to the adult pools with the other seals. Once she reaches 30kg she will be released back into the wild.
UPDATE: November 2005
Titch is a sweet natured pup and progressed well through the rehab in the nursery. She is gaining weight steadily and should no longer be referred to as "Titch" as she is currently very curvaceous.
UPDATE: January 2006
Titch was also out in the adult pools and gaining weight, all be it very slowly. At the same time as some of the other common pups had stomach upsets, we saw he too was looking quite lethargic and he had diarrhoea. The pool was drained and he was moved through to the isolation area where he was treated with fluids and antibiotics specifically good for gut infections. After a few days, he was much improved and he remained in isolation for another week to gain a fair bit of weight and then he was sent back outside to the adult pools. He is currently doing well and hopefully will reach a release-able weight soon.
UPDATE: May 2006
Titch was released back into the wild earlier this month to the joy of the Animal Care Team.
