Samson - Arrived on 25th June 2005

Samson, rescued common seal pupSamson was brought in on the 25th of June 2005 after he was abandoned due to human interference. He came by Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from the Island of Coll. He was slightly malnourished on arrival but otherwise fine. He has moved on to hand feeding on herring quickly and is ready to move in to the weaning pool. Samson is a very greedy pup eating almost 2kgs of herring a day making him the biggest of the pups in the nursery.
UPDATE: November 2005
Samson along with Sooty are no nonsense, get-fat-fast seals. They are still firm friends and love to play together next to window where they can keep an eye out for the visitors and blow bubbles when they pass by.
Samson and Sooty will hopefully be released back into the wild before Christmas 2005.
UPDATE: January 2006
On 12th of December 2005, Samson weighing a convincing 35 kg along with Sooty weighing 31kgs, both pups were set out on to the shore at a secluded sea loch two hours drive from the sanctuary. There is a colony of seals at the mouth of the Loch where the pups are able to haul out after their first taste of the wild since their rescue. It is a great site because it is privately owned land meaning there are few passing humans that might distract newly released pups from the main job in hand of becoming wild again.

Both pups were released from their transport boxes at the same time; they both flopped down into the water at the same time. They played in the shallows and seaweed together for quite a while. Then as if it was the most natural thing in the world, they swam out into the depths of the loch and that was the last we saw of them. Good luck Sooty and Samson.
