| Misty |
![]() | Misty was found stranded on a Ledaig beach, Connel on the 6th of August 2005. Unfortunately he had become separated from his mother before he was weaned and could not care for himself. Consequently he became very underweight and unable to hunt for himself. |
|
When Misty arrived at the sanctuary he was very quiet and very hungry. He was approximately 4 - 5 weeks old and weighed 8kg. After a short rest he was assessed for injuries and was found to have puncture bite marks on his flippers and older scars on each eye. A course of antibiotics, lots of care and most importantly food have sorted him out.
He has rapidly learnt to eat herring for himself and soon will move into the weaning pool where he can learn to eat underwater and gain more strength. The next stage will be to move outside with all the other pups and adult seals. As soon as he reaches 30kgs he will be ready for release back to the wild. |
| UPDATE: November 2005 Misty has been the slow coach over the summer and has just moved outside having learnt to eat his food without playing with it first. Now he is able to feed and compete with the adults and other pups in the main pools. He is a sweet wee soul and likes to watch the visitors more than they watch him. |
| UPDATE: January 2006 |
| Misty had arrived at the sanctuary as a pup hours away from death and we were very doubtful as to whether he would make it through the first night. However, he rallied and went on to make it outside to the adult pools.
However, we noticed on the 4th of December 2005 that he was looking hunched up and not particularly bright so he was removed back into the hospital. Blood and faeces samples were sent off to be checked for infection and parasites respectively. He was given fluids and antibiotics and he was given herring which he ate well. The next day, however, he was more lethargic and sadly he passed away at 5pm that afternoon.
The results of the post mortem and subsequent histology report showed that he had badly infected ulcers on his gut and it was the infection that in the end caused his death. We are very sad to have lost such a bright wee soldier of a pup especially after such a long haul to improve his condition and gain weight after rescue. |
