Marilyn
Marilyn, first grey seal (whitecoat) of the winter pupping seasonMarilyn, a grey seal pup, was spotted on a beach in the village of Campbeltown. She was observed by lots of members of the public, including the local police who watched her on their CCTV unit. Marilyn had been watched for nearly 24 hours when it was decided that her mother would not be returning for her. The SSPCA inspector John McAvoy picked her up and brought her to the sanctuary for assessment. On arrival at the centre, Marilyn weighed 13kg and was approximately two weeks old.
Marilyn was a white coat pup. Grey seal pups are born with a white fluffy coat that they start to shed when they reach 2-3 weeks old. She had no major injuries just a small graze on her chest from the rocks on the beach. As Marilyn was such a young pup she had to be fed milk which we gave to her via a tube into her stomach. She is now weaned and is eating herring. We are still force feeding her but she will learn to eat for herself soon.
Marilyn in the weaning pool on 18th November 2005Marilyn is a very feisty pup and cries a lots this is normal for a grey seal as they are much more vocal and aggressive than the common seals. When Marilyn reaches her target weight of 40kg she will go back to the wild.
UPDATE: January 2006
On 23rd of January 2006, Marilyn weighing 50kgs along with Audrey weighing 45kgs, were released two hours drive north of the sanctuary into an area where there is local colonies of grey seals, not too many fish farms and it is also very isolated so the seals don´t see people that might encourage them to return to the shore. After the difficult lift with the release boxes across the rocks, down to the shore, the lids were opened and the pups made their way to the water. Audrey went straight out and never really looked back for a good while. Marilyn was quite the opposite, taking an enormous time over sniffing and investigating her way over seaweed, stones, white sands and eventually the sea. After a good half hour the girls met up again a huge distance from the tideline and that is when we left them to it, for a life of hunting for fish and basking on rocks in a most idyllic setting.
