Katharine (Hepburn) - Arrived on 16th November 2005

Katharine (Hepburn), rescued grey seal pupKatharine (Hepburn), a grey seal pup, was found on a beach at Dwarwick Pier in Dunnet during very stormy weather. She had got separated from her mother and unfortunately was washed up on the beach. Luckily for Katharine she was rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue unit based in Thurso. After a short stay with the team at BDMLR she was transferred to the seal hospital here at Oban for some intensive care. On arrival at the centre on 16th of November 2005, she weighed 10kg and was approximately 2 weeks old.
She was in a sorry state with bite wounds and an eye infection. She had a course of antibiotics for her wounds and some cream for her eyes. After a couple of days of treatment she started to feel and look a lot better.

Katharine is a lovely pup who responds very well to her routine and is progressing well through the nursery system. She is now eating whole herring and will soon go into the weaning pool to learn how to eat fish in the water and swim for the first time.
UPDATE: January 2006
Katharine recently moved outside to the adult pools. She is feeding fine and enjoying the space but is not interacting with the other seals all that much. We are hopeful that she and Vivienne will pair up together.
UPDATE: May 2006
Katharine was released back into the wild earlier this month to the joy of the Animal Care Team.
