Holly - Arrived on 17th December 2004

Holly - Photo taken by Heather Holly is a gorgeous wee common seal pup that arrived to us from a local beach with the worst burden of lungworm our vet has ever encountered. To add to her problems, she had an infection of coccidiosis. This is a parasite that can, if not treated, cause rapid death. Both her health issues were successfully resolved after a whole month of intensive treatment. Holly is an angel and has learned to feed for herself very quickly. As soon as the greys have moved on outside, she will get her place in the weaning pool.
Update April 2005
Holly along with Noel and Dusty, three common pups, arrived into the sanctuary during the wintertime with bad health problems, primarily lungworm. Winter common pups are always more of a challenge because they are not straightforward motherless babies. They are seals that need healing and they have the added difficulty of being far more aggressive due to having been wild with two to three months independent from their mothers. This is apparent when they are outside in the adult pools. They all showed little interest in humans unless there was herring on offer, and they all got to their target weight by the Easter Holidays.

On the 14th of April 2005 dawned a glorious spring day and the animal care staff set off for the release site two hours drive from the sanctuary. Holly was also keen to get swimming but hung back until Dusty caught up. Both girls played in the weed and swam out to the middle of the loch and were last seen side-by-side heading for the Atlantic.
