GILL - Arrived 14th July 2004
Gill, rescued pup Gill arrived at the centre after having been observed alone for over 60 hours. Some locals became very concerned and contacted us. Our friends at the Hebredian Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) helped to get the pup to the ferry bound for Oban and made sure she was suitably secured for the journey.
Caledonian MacBrain, the ferry operators, are used to transporting pups for us each year and very kindly checked Gill was in a well ventilated area for her journey.
A member of the animal care team met the ferry at its terminal in Oban and brought Gill the short journey to the sanctuary. On arrival Gill was placed in a pen in our isolation area and left to rest. After a short while she was examined to assess her health. The team were very concerned about her weight at only 5.9kg. A pup this small is normally not viable and cannot be kept alive. Gill has proved us wrong and has gone on to thrive.
She is now feeding on whole herring and has taken to it very fast. Once she is a little larger and there is room she will move into the weaning pool where she can learn to eat her fish from the water. Once she has mastered this she will be ready to move outside with our residents. At 35kg Gill will be ready to return to the wild.
Updated 31st August 2004
Gill is now in the weaning pool with Bruce, Pearl and Flo. The four pups have a whale of a time and although Gill is the smallest she can really take care of herself. She barges to the front at feed times to make sure she is hand fed. She loves zooming around the pool and is rarely seen resting on the haul-out site. Once she can take fish from the water she will move outside with the others.
Updated January 2005
Gill has continued to make speedy progress through to the target weight and has been a hassle free pup from start to finish. She gets on well with all the other seals and is always a pleasure to be around.
Updated April 2005
Gill has been released back into the wild.
