Flora (MacDonald) was rescued on 26th June 2008
Flora (MacDonald), a common seal pup, was rescued on the grounds of the sanctuary. She was seen with her mother in the afternoon of the 25th June 2008 in Loch Creran. Unfortunately, Flora´s mother then disappeared and staff here monitored Flora for over 24 hours hoping that her mother would return. After this time it was apparent that her mother had been scared off and Flora was brought into the sanctuary late on the 26th June 2008. She has no visible wounds and her condition is generally good. After the initial re-hydration, we will be feeding her a special milk formula every few hours for the next couple of weeks. Then she will be moved on to fish and get a chance to swim in the weaning pool before being moved outside and eventually returned back to the wild. She was only 5 - 7 days old on arrival.
FloraUpdate: 26th July 2008 - Here are some photos of Flora taken in the hospital; she is currently being forced fed with small pieces of fish to encourage her to eat them on her own. Flora
Update: August 2008 - Flora is doing well and is happily taken the fish from the hands of the Animal Care Team without them always having to go in the pen with her. Flora can be a little more resistant at times but this only serves to keep the team on their toes.

We have been having some building work done to the Quarantine area and Weaning Pool and once this has been completed, the pups should get their first swim soon.

Flora´s neighbour, Mary, is itching to meet her and whenever she sees Flora being weighed, scratches at the glass of her nursery pen to get out and meet her. We are all sure that once they meet each other they will happily play together!

Update: September 2008 - Flora is now ready for the weaning pool as she is taking whole herring with no problems.

Update: October 2008 - Flora accompanies her new best friend Mary to the weaning pool area. She is also taking fish by hand and in the water. Flora is often seen pacing up and down pool at high speeds and loves splashing around the place.

Update: January 2009 - Flora has been moved to the large pools outside with Mary and Joanne for their final stages of rehabilitation and then release back into the wild.

Update: 1st February 2009 - Flora was released back into the wild along with Mary and Joanne on 29th January 2009.
