Ellen (MacArthur) was rescued on 12th July 2007
The latest of our new arrivals, Ellen, is named after Dame Ellen Patricia MacArthur who is, best known for breaking the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe. She arrived at the sanctuary on the 12th of July 2007 after being found on some rocks in Ellary. She had been there for almost three days with no sign of her mother and so the decision was made to transport her here to the sanctuary.

Upon examination, her age was estimated to be older than Jamie and Jelena at approximately 7 days old. She was free from injury and weighed 8.6kg on arrival and again is progressing well. Ellen is the wriggler of the group and is certainly feistier than the other pair.
Hospital Update: 1st August 2007 - Because of her feistiness in the beginning, Ellen was expected to put up the biggest fight when it came to giving her the herring, however, she took it very easily and like Jelena was much more laid back with the whole process. In the pool, she likes to chase her back flippers and then swim as fast as she can to the other side. Ellen, rescued common seal pup
Hospital Update - September 2007: Ellen has returned to her feisty roots and is very stubborn when feeding often refusing to open her mouth. The team are persisting with her and we are confident that she will get there in the end.
Hospital Update - October 2007: Ellen is still being hand fed although she is being a lot more compliant about it now. She´s opening her mouth and being a lot less awkward at feeding time. Once she starts to take the fish from us without being forced, she can then move on to the next stage where she is encourage to take the fish from the pool on her own. She has already been seen watching Jelena eating from the water so hopefully she will follow suit soon. At the moment she weighs 14kg.
Hospital Update - December 2007: As expected Ellen quickly learned to take fish for herself by copying Jelena, although to begin with she was struggling to compete against her. As soon as Jelena was moved out to the main pools, Ellen had more time to get the fish and has steadily put on weight. She was weighed at 22kg on the 30th of November 2007 and was put outside with the other seals. As with all pups, her weight will be monitored and once she reaches 30-35kg, she will be released.
EllenUpdate: 15th February 2008 - These photos of Ellen were taken earlier today in the outdoor seal encounters´ pool. She currently weighs 25.2kg. Ellen´s yellow flipper tag number is 27. Ellen
Update: March/April 2008 - Ellen is outside in our seal pools and is doing well. She currently weighs 25kg. The release weight for Common Seals is between 30-35kg.Ellen, rescued seal pup
Update: 5th May 2008 - Ellen was released back into the wild on the 30th of April 2008 along with Jelena. These two little girls were quite reluctant to go but soon got the idea!
