Burt (Lancaster) - Arrived on 4th November 2005

Burt Lancaster, rescued grey seal pupBurt (Lancaster), a grey seal pup, was found on a remote beach in the far north of Scotland after a spell of very bad storms. He was taken to the Highland Wildlife Hospital Trust by the SSPCA for a few days before heading down to Oban to the seal pup hospital. On arrival at the centre on 4th of November 2005, he weighed 14.3kg and was approximately 2 - 3 weeks old.
Burt was very malnourished for such a large pup, we think he got separated from his mother before he was fully weaned. He had some deep wounds on his rear flippers and was very dehydrated.

After some intensive care Burt is making great progress through the nursery. He is eating whole herring and lots of them. Burt is a very gentle boy with a sweet nature; hopefully he will go to the weaning pool soon and learn the joys of swimming and eating fish in the water.
Burt Lancaster, rescued grey seal pupUPDATE: January 2006
Burt has spent the last few weeks outside in the weaning pool and has now been moved outside to the adult pools to be with James, Katharine, Vivienne, Titch, Mouse and the adults. We are very happy with his progress and hope he enjoys the space and interaction that the outdoor pools provide.
UPDATE: May 2006 - Burt was released back into the wild earlier this month to the joy of the Animal Care Team.
