LORA
Lora, rescued pup Lora was brought to the sanctuary from John O´Groats. She was a very young pup and appeared to have very few problems apart from this. It seems likely that she was separated from her mother during the stormy weather that preceded her rescue.
Now that she is at the sanctuary she is doing very well and is gaining weight quickly. Lora´s initial examination and routine blood tests showed no abnormalities except slight anaemia, this would be rectified by doubling the normal iron tablet dose given to all rescued pups.
Lora has always been easy to handle and does not mind the animal care team fiddling about with her. The only thing she doesn´t like is having her eyes washed. Seals can get a lot of ´sleep´ around their eyes just like humans do, so while they are small and have to stay out of the water they need regular cleaning.
Since Lora has put on some extra weight she is able to have a swim in the weaning pool each day. She loves to move around examining every detail. She is also hand feeding now which means she takes the fish almost unaided and heralds the next stage of her rehabilitation. In the next few weeks, Lora will move to the pool full-time and learn to eat fish from the water. Once this has been fully grasped, she can move to the outdoor pools.
UPDATE 31/01/04
Lora is now feeding very well in the weaning pool although she moves very slowly to pick the fish off the bottom, knowing there is no need to hurry. She will be moved to the outdoor pools in the next couple of days and this should hopefully speed her up. The adult seals should provide great competition for Lora and will spur her on to feed quickly and effectively.
