Audrey (Hepburn)

Audrey (Hepburn), rescued grey seal pupAudrey (Hepburn), a grey seal pup, was rescued from Thurso. Huge storms battered the Northern coast of Scotland mid December and it meant that Audrey became separated from her mother and was left alone at the crucial point of weaning. She probably was disorientated, storm tired and unable to find food. Luckily, Audrey was spotted hauled out high up the shore and was rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue unit based in Thurso.
After a short stay with the team at BDMLR she was transferred to the seal hospital here at Oban to gain weight and strength ready to be released. On arrival, she weighed 21kg and was approximately 4-5 weeks old.

After a couple of days of food and a course of antibiotics and some warmth she picked up. Audrey is a gorgeous pup who speeded through the nursery and the weaning pool. She quickly learnt to eat fish underwater for herself and she was able to move outside to the adult pools and her main job now is to gain weight. Hopefully she will reach 45kgs soon and we will be able to release her back to the wild February time.
UPDATE: January 2006
On 23rd of January 2006, Audrey weighing 45kgs along with Marilyn weighing 50kgs, were released two hours drive north of the sanctuary into an area where there is local colonies of grey seals, not too many fish farms and it is also very isolated so the seals don´t see people that might encourage them to return to the shore. After the difficult lift with the release boxes across the rocks, down to the shore, the lids were opened and the pups made their way to the water. Audrey went straight out and never really looked back for a good while. Marilyn was quite the opposite, taking an enormous time over sniffing and investigating her way over seaweed, stones, white sands and eventually the sea. After a good half hour the girls met up again a huge distance from the tideline and that is when we left them to it, for a life of hunting for fish and basking on rocks in a most idyllic setting.
UPDATE: May 2006
Audrey was released back into the wild earlier this month to the joy of the Animal Care Team.
