 | Katy showed signs of dehydration - seals have a wet ring around each eye when they are hydrated, and Katy did not have this. We brought her back to our seal hospital and gave her fluids for 24 hours, and then we started her on multi-milk after this.
Katy was a very skinny pup, and only weighed 9kg when we brought her in, which is not a lot for a pup that is 10 days old!

The animal care team kept a close eye on Katy, and she´s responding well to her precautionary treatments. She also thoroughly enjoys the milk we´re giving her!

Update : 5th July 2011 - Katy had her first fish today! We will start to wean her slowly onto whole fish, and eventually stop giving her multi-milk.
Update : 8th July 2011 - Katy hand-fed today for the first time (photo left). She has only been with us approximately one week and she is already hand feeding, this is good progress!
|
Update : 21st July 2011 - Katy now weighs 12kg, only another 3kg to go before we start to encourage her to feed for herself. She has put on a lot of weight since being with us, and has responded really well to all the treatments we gave her.
Photo right: Katy is progressing really well in her second week.

Update: August 2011 - Katy has been moved to the outside seal enclosure to learn how to compete for fish with other seals. Kate´s flipper tag number is 04 (white).
Update: 28th October 2011 - Katy along with the other six rescued seal pups are going to be released in November 2011!
They are fully rehabilitated and the animal care team are certain that it´s time for these little ones to go back to the wild.
|
