Sorbet was rescued on 28th September 2025 Sorbet, a 2-3 days old female (whitecoat) grey seal pup, was rescued on the 28th of September 2025 from Portreath harbour by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medic volunteers. This young seal pup was found as a whitecoat on the busy beach, exhausted after being washed around in the rough seas and separated from her mum.   She had superficial ulcers in both eyes and a fresh umbilicus which meant, she was less than 2 days old. The pup was uplifted by the BDMLR medics from the beach and taken to the Seal Sanctuary in Gweek for care and rehabilitation. All new seal pups arrivals at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary have to be tested for avian flu before admittance due to the risk to the resident animals, especially the puffins. Photo Credit : BDMLR Once Sorbet was settled into the isolation pen of hospital, the Sanctuary´s vet carried out an assessment of the pup.   She still had her umbilical cord which will fall off in a day or so.   For a week she will be tube-fed 4-6 times a day including nights with liquidised fish soup and then slowly introduced to eating whole fish.   She currently weighs 13.8kg. Update : 23rd October 2025 - Sorbet´s eyes have all healed up with eyedrops, but she is still on some antibiotics until her umbilicus is completely closed.   Sorbet is very shouty but that´s okay, she is just letting the staff know what she needs, and that is lots of food!   Don´t worry though, she is being fed 4 times a day, when they also clean the umbilicus.   Once she is big enough, Sorbet will be moved outside to the big pools. Update : 7th November 2025 - It will not be too long before Sorbet is moved down to the outside nursery pools to continue her rehabilitation. Update - 14th November 2025 : Sorbet was moved down to the outside pools a few days ago for her next stage of rehabilitation.   This means she is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.   She currently weighs 16.5kg. Pups in the outside pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild. Update - 24th November 2025 : Sorbet is slowly putting on weight and it will not be too longer before she is returned to the wild in the next month or so.   She is currently sharing her pool with another rescued seal pup named Flapjack. Pup Update : On 2nd of January 2026 the Cornish Seal Sanctuary released their next 2 rescued seal pups, Sorbet and Flapjack, for the 2025/26 rescue season.   All the pups in the rehab pool were weighed, Sorbet and Flapjack were at the correct target weight of 30kg. Sorbet and Flapjack were loaded into the back of the vehicle from the rehabilitation pool and released back into the wild.   They confidently made their way down to the water; one look back to their carers for the past 2 months, at this point it is a heart-warming moment that marks the successful end of their rehabilitation journey.   We all wished them good luck and waved with tears in our eyes.
