Rubicon was rescued on 23rd June 2023

Rubicon was rescued on the 23rd of June 2023 from Snettisham beach after being separated by his mum. Assistant Curator Sophie travelled to the beach and saw that Rubicon was alone and distressed in the middle of a mud flat. Some time later both a very muddy Rubicon and Sophie were back at the hospital.

The animal care team estimate that at the time of the rescue, Rubicon was between 2 and 3 weeks old.

He is the second pup of the 2023 commons rescue season!

As you may have guessed, this season´s naming theme is types of soft drinks!   Between the Displays Team who will care for Rubicon, it was decided that Rubicon would suit him very well, he is affectionately called Rubi for short.

Update - 8th July 2023 : Rubicon is being well cared for by their specialist animal care team and is so far showing positive signs.   As he progresses in his rehabilitation journey, he will eventually move to their pup recovery pool which is outside and next to the resident seal pool.

Update - 6th October 2023 : Rubicon and another rescued seal pups Nesquik spent approximately 2 months in the hospital being cared for, they slowly built up their strength thanks to the intensive care of the Animal Care Team to the point when they were ready to be moved to the outside recovery pool.

During their time in the recovery pool, they learnt to swim in deeper water, gain more muscle strength and understand that you have to fight to catch a fish.

On 3rd October 2023, the rescued common seal pups had completed their rehabilitation and reached their target weights of over 25kg+ and received their final health checks, this meant there were ready to be released back into the wild. The Animal Care Team put the two pups in stretchers and with extra volunteers, released them from a local beach.   Click here to see a selection of photos of their release.   Also you will find more photos on our Flickr Account.
