Roulade was rescued on 20th November 2025

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary received several telephone calls from concerned members of the public asking to help a seal pup on the beach.   There was also a message on the Coverack community facebook page asking who to contact.

When Heather and Beth, from the Sanctuary´s animal care team expert specialists, arrived at the steps down to the beach opposite The Bay Hotel in Coverack, there were local people putting up the Christmas lights along the seafront.   Heather and Beth were directed to where the seal pup was resting and asleep at the far end of the beach.   The weather was awful...hailstones and rain.

This 10-12 week old female grey seal pup was found with puncture wounds to her body, malnourished, respiratory problems (this could be caused by lungworm), weighed 16.9kg with a high temperature of 38.8oC. During the assessment on the beach, the pup was very feisty.

The pup has been named Roulade.   Upon arrival at the hospital, the Sanctuary´s vet carried out a full assessment of the pup and prescribed a course of antibiotics.   The animal care team are wound cleaning several times a day to help her heal.   She is also on a nebuliser to help with her breathing.

For now, it´s all about lots of rest for this little one, she is taking the vet´s orders very seriously.

Update - 14th January 2026 : Roulade was moved down to the outside nursery pools for her next stage of rehabilitation.   This means she is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.   She currently weighs 20.2kg.

Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.

Her flipper tag ID number - SL351 (yellow)
