Community rallies to give Jarvis the seal the chance to see for the first time

Thousands of supporters have come together to help a much-loved Cornish Seal Sanctuary resident take the next step towards sight, with a fundraising appeal for Jarvis the seal exceeding its £15,600 target ahead of his planned surgery this week.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is celebrating the extraordinary success of its fundraising campaign to fund specialist cataract surgery for resident common seal Jarvis, who has lived with cataracts in both eyes since his rescue in 2016.

Thanks to overwhelming support from the local community and seal lovers across the globe, more than £16,000 has been raised through public donations, helping to make the potentially life-changing operation possible.

Jarvis, now nearly 10 years old, has never seen the world around him.   Despite his blindness, he has become one of the Sanctuary´s most beloved residents, known for his playful nature, determination and cheeky personality.

His surgery is due to take place this week, with specialist veterinary surgeons aiming to restore vision in one or both eyes.

Clare Addyman, Animal Care Specialist and Jarvis´ primary carer at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, said "The response to Jarvis´ appeal has been truly incredible.   We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity shown by so many people who wanted to give Jarvis this opportunity."

Clare continues "Every donation, every message of support and every share of his story has helped us reach this point.   Knowing that so many people care about Jarvis and want to see him succeed means the world to our team."

"We are approaching the surgery with cautious optimism.   While there are no guarantees, this operation gives Jarvis the best possible chance of experiencing sight for the first time, and that is something we never thought would be possible when he first arrived with us."

As the surgery date neared, a final boost came from Southwest-based cataract surgery specialists, Newmedica Plymouth, whose £2,800 donation helped take the campaign beyond its target.

Amanda Champion, Operations Director at Newmedica Plymouth, said "We were really heartened to hear about this fundraising appeal for Jarvis the seal.   It´s wonderful that so many people have got behind this and we´re delighted to be part of it.   We´re passionate about helping restore sight, knowing how life-changing it can be.   While we´re very comfortable operating on human eyes, we are full of admiration of the type of expertise it takes to operate on a seal´s eyes.   Whether for humans or animals, the hugely positive impact is the same, and we wish him the best of luck.   We´re very much looking forward to hearing how Jarvis embraces his new life."

Any additional funds raised beyond the appeal target will help support Jarvis´ post-operative care, rehabilitation and ongoing specialist treatment as he recovers from the procedure.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary has thanked everyone who contributed to the appeal, from those who made donations and shared updates on social media to businesses that offered their support along the way.

For now, all eyes are on Jarvis as his dedicated care team prepare him for the next stage of his journey.

"This appeal has shown just how powerful community support can be," added Clare.   "Jarvis has touched the hearts of thousands of people and we couldn´t have reached this milestone without them.   Whatever happens next, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped make this opportunity possible."
