Fool was rescued on 20th February 2026

Say hello to Fool, a 4-5 months old male grey seal pup, who was rescued from Porthgwarra on the 20th of January 2026 by Alison and Kate, the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medic volunteers.
Alison, one of the BDMLR volunteer medics, said "This was an early afternoon call-out with Kate. Our initial visual assessment of breathing rate was 55/2, some coughing and pink nasal discharge and frothy saliva."
Alison continues "As the incoming tide had nearly reached the pup and it was clearly unwell, I made the decision to bag the pup asap and move it to a safe place for further assessment. Although extremely bright(!) and a fairish weight for a pup that large, his respiratory effort was a significant concern as was his slightly elevated temperature".

After spending a few days at the BDMLR´s hospital, Fool was transferred to the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek on the 23rd of February 2026 to continue his rehabilitation. He is currently in the main hospital and recovering well and will soon start learning how to navigate his pool with some swims and lots of rest before Fool graduates to the outside and make some friends in the nursery pools.
|
Update - 21st March 2026 : Fool was moved down to the outside nursery pools for his next stage of rehabilitation a few days ago. This means he is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in. This photo below was taken on the 21st of March 2026 in nursery pool number 3.
Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.
His right flipper tag ID number SL384 (yellow).

By monitoring the behaviour of seals after release back into the wild, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, Seal Research Trust and other organisations can use this information to define the best practice standards and policies that they can share with the international rescue community.
Each seal´s fur pattern is unique and enables the organisations to track them for life.
Seals face many challenges, yet we all depend on them to balance our marine ecosystem, which is essential to make the oxygen we breathe.
Seals are our globally rare wildlife tourist attraction, helping diversify coastal economic prosperity.
