Flapjack was rescued on 5th November 2025

This 10-12 days old male (whitecoat) grey seal pup was rescued on the 5th of November 2025 from Bucks Mills beach, Bideford, by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medic volunteers.

Louise Round, a BDMLR volunteer medic, said "After several days of monitoring this whitecoat on a remote beach in North Devon, with no mum in sight and bad weather coming in, it was decided that an uplift and rehab was in order.   Carolyn Butler did an excellent job locating and then keeping an eye on him, as he tried to get as far away from the sea as possible!"

Louise continues "An "interesting" uplift on a steep slope with moving shingle (and a very feisty pup) was followed by a precarious walk back along the rocky beach and a steep slipway.   Stephen, Carolyn and I named him, Flapjack, as we were on our way down to the BDMLR Cornwall Seal Hospital.   With thanks to the other BDMLR medics, Lewis Griffin and Michelle Robinson Clement for all their help and coordination".

Update - 24th November 2025 : A few days ago, Flapjack was moved down to the outside nursery pool number 4 for his next stage of rehabilitation.   This means he is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.

He is sharing this nursery pool with another rescued seal pup named Sorbet, they are doing very well and learning how to compete for fish which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.

His flipper tag ID number is SL340 (yellow).

These photos below were taken in the nursery pool on the 23rd of November 2025.

Pup Update : On 2nd of January 2026 the Cornish Seal Sanctuary released their next 2 rescued seal pups, Sorbet and Flapjack, for the 2025/26 rescue season.   All the pups in the rehab pool were weighed, Sorbet and Flapjack were at the correct target weight of 30kg.

Flapjack and Sorbet were loaded into the back of the vehicle from the rehabilitation pool and released back into the wild.   They confidently made their way down to the water; one look back to their carers for the past 2 months, at this point it is a heart-warming moment that marks the successful end of their rehabilitation journey.   We all wished them good luck and waved with tears in our eyes.
