Chocolate Cake was rescued on 17th January 2026 Meet Chocolate Cake, a 10-12 weeks old female grey seal pup, was rescued from Hawkers Cove on the 17th of January 2026 by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medic volunteers.   She was found with wounds to her body, respiratory problems, malnourished and underweight. A decision was made to take the pup to the BDMLR´s hospital in Cornwall for initial treatment and care. These photos below were taken on the 24th of January 2026 in the BDMLR hospital. Update - 28th January 2026 : After spending a week at the BDMLR´s hospital for initial care and treatment, Chocolate Cake was transferred to the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek on the 26th of January 2026 to continue her rehabilitation.   She is currently in the main hospital, it will not be too long before Chocolate Cake is moved to the outside nursery pools. Update - 12th February 2026 : Chocolate Cake was moved down to the outside pools a few days ago for her next stage of rehabilitation.   This means she is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.   She currently weighs 17.9kg. Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.   Photos below were taken on 12th of February 2026. Chocolate Cake´s flipper tag number is SL379 (yellow). Update - 15th February 2026 : Chocolate Cake is struggling to keep fish down at the moment and is still quite small so the animal care team specialists couldn´t have her with any competition in the nursery pools, risk her losing too much weight.   She is currently on anti-nausea treatment now which is an injectable so all in all better to have her up in the hospital again where the team can monitor the pup closely.   Get well soon Chocolate Cake. Update - 23rd February 2026 : Sadly a few days later, Chocolate Cake passed away on the 20th of February 2026.   It is always very sad when one of the rescued pups dies but sometimes these little ones just don´t have enough antibodies and strength in them to pull through, despite the best efforts of all the Sanctuary´s Animal Care Specialists.
