Meet Baloo!
There´s a good reason why Baloo is not quite fitting into our "Botanicals" name theme for this seasons seals, and that's because this fella already came christened with a name!
Baloo appeared on our shores on Monday 30th December 2019 in Ballinoulart, Co. Wexford looking skinny and tired but with a bright yellow adornment on his back flipper. His finder Ronan messaged us a photo and we sent our volunteer Ericka Fennessy out to take a look but in the meantime the wee guy had taken a dip and headed out to sea...
In the meantime, we reached out to our European seal rescue network to seek info and he was quickly identified as Baloo and had been in rehab previously at Cornish Seal Sanctuary. He had been released on December 2nd after a successful recovery but, alas, somehow he must have run into trouble again and needed some extra assistance.
In case you missed it, this is the second Cornish seal we have spotted this week. We previously spotted another seal with a yellow tag on December 26th. This seal was named Pong and had been released from the Cornish Seal Sanctuary on the same day as Baloo. Pong seemed to be of good body condition and went off swimming as our volunteer Shauna Murphy attended. Hopefully, he´ll continue to thrive in the wild!
Back to Baloo; he decided to show up again on some sand dunes in Old Bawn, Co. Wexford on 1st January 2020 where he was found by Brenda and her husband who were out walking. We went and collected him straight away and he was soon happily warming up in his ICU, and has taken the title as our first seal to be admitted in 2020. He has unfortunately caught a cough and lost a good bit of weight but we will be sure to get him back to health soon! Fingers crossed for him everyone!
