Update 10th June 2005

After a week or so of being hand fed their fish, the convalescent pool seals have become rather demanding! Magnus is doing lots of splashing when he doesn’t think he is getting enough fish, Snoopy has started whining very loudly to get the animal care team’s attention, whilst Ray simply bounces out of the pool right in front of the buckets getting everyone very wet.

Anneka and Sheba’s persistent eye problems continue, both seals are being maintained on pain relief until the problem resolves.

Flotsam and Jetsam seem to have benefited from their week off training and have become very enthusiastic chasing after their fish and porpoising right out of the water.

Flipper and Yulelogs have both been a little off their training this week. They seem to be easily distracted by the visitors to the sanctuary, Logs in particular has been closely watching people’s legs as they walk past instead of concentrating on his fish.

Rocky and Pepper have begun moulting their old winter coats this week, which is being replaced by new shiny coppery hair.

Sealion Cove has been cleaned out this week, which has meant lots of sunbathing for Carus and Dipsy on Wednesday. The animal care team have a new volunteer, Andy, who has taken a particular shine to Carus. The feeling seems to be mutual as when Andy took it upon himself to be Carus’ personal trainer, the animal care team witnessed Carus running for the first time in a long time!

Thai and Bamboo have been up to their usual tricks this week, ripping up plants, hanging off and tearing the animal care team’s protective trousers and destroying anything else that they take a dislike too. Bamboo has also taught himself a new trick; juggling peanuts and throwing them on to his head!

The ponies and goats have all been pampered this week having been wormed and had a manicure. They have also had some extra treats of broccoli and salad.

PUP UPDATE

Briannock is still being force fed fish and is yet to show an interest in feeding herself but she is getting their slowly. After being given an extra feed at midnight, she is now starting to put on weight, however, she is still using her heat lamp to keep her warm at night.

Wey has recovered well from her operation to remove some of her teeth. She is feeding herself well and is bright and ever hungry!! She too is starting to put on weight.

April (new arrival from RSPCA West Hatch) is now in a nursery pool with Bubbles and Gannel. She has still not learnt to feed herself and has lost a little weight but the animal care team has been supplementing her with a few fish each day to remind her what fish are for and encourage her to feed herself.
