YOGI - Rescued on 14th December 2006

On Thursday afternoon (14th of December 2006) the Sanctuary received a telephone call from a member of the public about a seal on Fistral Beach at Newquay. The report indicated that the pup was exhausted from being out in the rough seas and was taking a nap on the beach. We asked the girls, who reported it, to stay with the pup and just keep an eye on it. At 4pm we had a call to say the pup was a little wheezy and coughing. At this point we decided that we would pop down to Newquay and take a look. Both Tamara and Rachael headed out with rescue kit and cage to Newquay. Tamara and Rachael arrived at Fistral Beach in the dark, luckily the moon was bright and we could find our way to the pup. The pup was quiet on the beach, and covered in sand luckily the wind was not too strong. We took its temperature and it was 1 degree higher, we decided to give it some fluids and as it was a little underweight and coughing and wheezing, we decide to take it back to Gweek.
Back at the Sanctuary the pup was put in to isolation and given a clinical assessment. The seal had some small puncture wounds to its rear flippers and a scratch to its eye. The pup was a good weight at around 17 kilos and around 5 weeks old. The pup is a little boy and has been named Yogi. Photo of Yogi was taken by Rachael Vine
