SPONGEBOB - Rescued on 27th October 2006

Photo of Spongebob was taken on 27th October 2006 by Rachael Vine On Friday the 27th October 2006 the Sanctuary received a phone call from a lady who was looking down at Fistral Beach at Newquay and saw a small little pup on the beach, and was concerned about it. Tamara loaded up the land rover with the cage and rescue kit and headed over to Newquay with Rachael. When we arrived we found the pup to be down the bottom of a cliff with a small thin path that had been worn away by other people. Tamara and Rachael headed down the cliff with the cage and arrived on the beach to find a very thin pup.
We took it temperature which was normal and treated the puncture wounds and cuts to his body, before tube feeding him some liquid for the journey back to the Sanctuary. The seal was put in to the cage and taken up the cliff, and brought back to the hospital and put in to isolation 2.

We then gave him his clinical and cleaned and treated his wounds. We also gave him some antibiotics to stop any infection, and some blood. As he is a little boy, the people on the beach helped name the seal, he is called Spongebob.
Hospital Update: 17th November 2006 - Spongebob is enjoying his bigger pen now he is out of isolation. Both his ear and eye infections have cleared up with treatment and he is doing well. Spongebob´s orange flipper tag number is 13.Spongebob in the hospital - photo was taken on 17th November 2006 by Rachael Vine

Release Update: 24th April 2007 - On Friday 20th of April 2007 at 7am Spongebob along with Ariel, Nemo, Tigger, Bambi and Belle were loaded up into the trailer for their release back into the wild, and we headed out to Gwithian. We arrived after a very bumpy journey (seals getting excited about the sea air) to find the water flat and calm. As soon as the trailer door was down, all six were off, with Ariel leading the way, two stayed around for about 10 minutes before finally disappearing around the coast. All in the trailer
