LORNE
Lorne, one of our residentsLorne was born in June 1982, he was abandoned on the East Coast of Scotland and he was rescued by the SSPCA and then brought to Oban to be cared for.
Lorne is our only male seal that is a resident and he is very much the boss in the pools. He sometimes makes spectacular noises that originate from a mating growl to the females, but sometimes he growls to get attention at feeding times to encourage us to feed him more herring. Lorne is the father of all Blondie and Gigha's pups.
Lorne has had to stay as a resident at the Scottish Sealife Sanctuary because of the intensive handling he received when he was a young pup. In the early eighties it was not known whether seal pups could be released after rehabilitation. Prior to his arrival at the Sanctuary, pups were cared for almost too much, making it impossible for them to be released to the wild.
LORA
LoraLora is our newest resident to the Sanctuary and she was born here on Friday 27th of July 2007 and is the tenth pup born to our resident adults Lorne and Gigha. Unfortunately the joy of Loras' arrival and been tinged with sadness as her mother Gigha, our oldest resident has passed away at the grand old age of 24.
Lora is doing very well and appears to be unaffected by this death possibly because she would have left her mother by now if she had been in the wild. Lora will be staying here at the sanctuary as there has been a change in the law that means seals born in captivity stay in captivity. She is currently in the main pools with her dad Lorne and is progressing well.
