Cornwall´s coasts need you!
We are lucky enough to have over 150 beautiful beaches on our delightful doorstep and with so many visitors to our County each year we need to ensure that they are always taken care of.

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) runs an annual campaign called "Beachwatch" and this year is their 20th year of doing so. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary joined the watch in 2004 and we are happy to say we are heading up our own Beach Clean again.

Volunteers who helped to clean the beach at Gwithian by Sue Sayer We will be doing a sweep of two beaches on the 21st and 22nd September 2013; Gwithian and Gunwalloe Fishing Cove. These beaches are particularly important to us because we sometimes use them for releasing our rescued pups back to the wild. Our pup season begins September so the annual "Beachwatch" runs perfectly with this.

Thousands of people join in with beach cleans around the UK over the MCS "Beachwatch" weekend and we welcome anyone who wants to lend a hand to come and join us in looking after our local beaches.
Dan Jarvis, Animal Care Assistant here at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is heading up this year´s "Beachwatch" and has said "Keeping our beaches clean is important for wildlife as marine litter poses a huge threat to them if they become entangled in rope or net, or otherwise ingest items like plastics, which not only cause them nasty injuries, but can lead to a prolonged and painful death." Beach clean photo 2006 "Through our seal rescue work at the Sanctuary, we have seen many cases over the years. In Cornwall we pride ourselves on the great reputation of our beautiful coastline and wildlife that inhabits it and it is one of the leading reasons tourists want to visit this region. However, we must help to take responsibility for keeping it that way and this is a great way of doing it - making it a community effort and raising awareness of the dangers pollution poses, so together we can help create a cleaner, safer environment for the animals that use it - including us humans!"
Be proud of your beaches and get involved in your local areas by joining us on the 21st and 22nd September 2013.
