Humboldt penguins are found off the west coast of South America, along the shores of Peru and Northern Chile. Humboldts are one of three penguin species (out of 17 penguin species world-wide) that have previously been listed as threatened or endangered in the wild.
The birds at the sanctuary were last year’s chicks that came from a successful captive breeding programme at Flamingo Land, North Yorkshire. They had been transported to the sanctuary and kept for several weeks while their permanent home in a new exhibit at the Weymouth Sea Life Centre was prepared.
They are now happily settled into their new home in Weymouth.
