We received a call about a seal pup on the slipway at Lamorna Cove and Dan (a member of the animal care team on a day off) was asked to go and take a look. The condition of the pup was very poor and it was decided it needed to come in.
Back at the Sanctuary a full clinical assessment was carried out on the pup. The pup was estimated to be around 6 weeks old, male and weighed in at 13 kilos. He was very malnourished with puncture wounds to his rear left flippers, but also with a small staining to left eye which will be monitored during his stay. This pup has been named Paul Russell.
Update: 26th January 2012 - Paul Russell´s flipper tag number is 36 (green). He is now in the outside nursery pool.
Update: 16th March 2012 - Paul Russell is now in the outside nursery pool 1 with Bob Champion.
Update: 4th April 2012 - Photo left of Paul Russell was taken on 4th April 2012. Click here to see other photos of Paul Russell.
Update: 24th April 2012 - Paul Russell is in the convalescent pool, doing really well and putting on weight. The rescued pups are enjoying the piggy back rides around the pool with the resident seals, but it is going to be a few more weeks before any pups are ready for release back to the wild.
Update: 30th May 2012 - Paul Russell is currently in the nursery pool.
Update: 7th August 2012 - Paul Russell was released back to the wild on 3rd August 2012 at Gwithian. Click here to read the Press Release.
