Update April 2005

Spring has sprung and the otters are busy, exploring their enclosure, digging fresh holts and finding new sprainting areas. Although the otters use their manmade holt for most of their naps, they have been excavating an area near the lower pool. The ´burrow´ goes back about a foot, which is good enough for a short snooze. However, this is nothing compared to a huge holt they dug out last year that runs for approx. 5 metres. One of our Otters
One of our Otters Both Sula and Fingal have settled well with Karyn and Heather and they interact with both girls. They enjoy the extra visits from staff in the winter when the animal care team have a little more time to stop and play with the otters. Sula will happily have a stick pulled around for her to chase and Fingal likes his nose to be tickled with a bit of straw.
Sadly in the last six months we have had 5 wild European otters reported dead on roads close to the sanctuary. While this is not a happy side to working at the sanctuary it does indicate that otter numbers in the area are on the increase as never in years previous have we had such a large number of reports. We appeal to you to take care driving at dusk and dawn in likely otter areas.
