| MARLIN - RESCUED 4th July 2004 | |
| Marlin was found on some farmland near Arisaig by a couple walking their dog. They were very surprised to see him so far from the water and wouldn´t have spotted him if their dog hadn´t started to act strangely. Because his location in rural land he was found with blue bottle eggs layed in his ears, fur and anus. He also had a tick below his left ear. Due to these immediate problems the 24 hour observation period had to be ignored and Marlin was taken for immediate help. |

| The couple who found him had done a very good job of cleaning him up and removing most of the fly eggs. Despite this we found that some eggs had already hatched into maggots and were protruding from his anus where they would be feeding on the pups tissues. Prompt treatment was required to minimise damage and so our local veterinary surgeon provided treatment very quickly. Marlin appears to be doing very well and will be given multi-milk until he is 2 weeks old. After this point he will be weaned onto fish to continue his road towards release. As a very wriggly and lively pup he will be a challenge throughout his rehabilitation! | |

| Sadly I have to inform our website users that we have lost Marlin on the 14th of July 2004.
The loss of Marlin was a huge shock to all the staff at the sanctuary. After arriving in a very poorly state, Marlin appeared to settle in and start to thrive. When he arrived he had bluebottle eggs laid on his fur and larvae hatching out internally. These larvae feed on the tissue lining the orifices where they hatch and can cause a lot of damage. The damage that Marlin had sustained was obviously far more serious than was thought and caused starvation due to damage to the digestive system. It is hard to cope when a pup starves in our care but the infestation he had suffered was irreparable. | |
