James Dean

James Dean, rescued grey seal pup We received a phone call asking if we would be able to take James when he was rescued by one of the inspectors for the SSPCA near Inverness. He most likely had lost his mother not long after he was born as he arrived at the sanctuary on the 9th of November as a whitecoat pup. You can see the white fur that still remains on his rear flippers, the rest of which he moulted not long after he arrived at the sanctuary.
On arrival, James, a grey seal pup, weighed 13.5kg and was approximately one week old. He was underweight for his age and stood no chance of survival without a mother to give him the 40% fat milk that the she feeds her pup for the first 3 weeks of a grey pup´s life. James also had a small abscess on his eyelid that quickly healed up with a course of antibiotics.

After initially being fed fish soup James quickly learnt to eat whole fish. He is a fairly typical male grey seal, rugged, grumpy and noisy, but he is gaining weight fine and growing well.
UPDATE: January 2006
James is doing really well and is gaining weight steadily outside in the main pools. We are hopeful that he will be ready for release at the same time as Vivienne and Katharine around Easter time.
UPDATE: May 2006
James was released back into the wild earlier this month to the joy of the Animal Care Team.
