Honor (Blackman) arrived at the centre on 3rd November 2008

Honor (Blackman)Honor (Blackman), a grey seal pup, was brought to us on 3rd November 2008 after it has been spotted alone on a beach in the Isle of Barra. In the wild a grey seal would be with its mother for approximately 3 weeks before she leaves it to fend for itself. In this time she would feed the pup up until it weighed roughly 40kg. His approximate age on arrival was between 4 - 5 weeks old and weighed 14.2kg.

In the case of Honor, she has left her mother and been unable to look after herself. After washing up on the beach birds have attacked her and she has lost her right eye. The vet has already looked at her and a decision will be made about the eye and its treatment. We are still confident that she can be released.
As Honor would no longer have been on its mother´s milk she has already started to get weaned on to fish and we are feeding her small slices of herring. Over the next few weeks the size of the slices will be increased until she takes whole herring and then he will be moved to the weaning pool area before being put outside prior to release.

Update: January 2009 - Honor has been moved to the large pools outside with Sean for their final stages of rehabilitation and then release back into the wild.

Update: March 2009 - Honor was released back into the wild on 5th March 2009 along with Daniel and Ursula.
