FLO - Arrived 4th July 2004
Flo, rescued pup Flo and Pearl were picked up together from near a golf course on Seil Island. Pups can be quite snappy towards other pups but these two have obviously bonded well and often curl up together to sleep. On arrival we believed that they may be sisters as they look so similar and get along so well. Twins are very rare in seals but are not impossible.
We carried out initial assessments on the pups once they were settled into their pens and at this point decided that they are not related. It seems that Flo is a slightly older pup than Pearl as she has larger, more developed teeth and her umbilicus has completely healed over. Despite getting along so well these pups do have contrasting looks and personalities. Flo is the darker pup and is far sleepier and calmer than Pearl. They are both fairly quiet most of the time but when one starts to call the other one will too. If all goes well with Flo she will be weaned onto fish over the next week. Once she is eating fish she will develop quickly but it will take her around 3 - 4 months before she is ready for release.
Updated 31st August 2004
Flo is currently in the weaning pool with Pearl, Bruce and Gill. She and Pearl are still almost inseparable and seem to do everything together. If they are eating they do it together, if they want a rest they curl up together and if they are playing they play with one another. After a few more days in the weaning pool we will simply throw the food in for Flo and when she eats unaided she will move outside with the residents.
Updated January 2005
Flo and Pearl are as inseparable as ever, swimming and playing together lots but also interacting with the other pups. No one can remember a pair of pups that so definitely belong together as Pearl and Flo and it is amazing that they are still as close as the day they moved into each others pen.
Updated April 2005
Flo has been released back into the wild.
