Clarisse, along with Angie and Bruiser, three grey seal pups, were rescued by Ali Jack and the team of animal medics at BDLMR (British Divers Marine Life Rescue) up in Thurso. All the pups were about 4-5 weeks old and had received their initial first aid prior to their journey south to the Sanctuary. All three were very aggressive pups and were a ‘challenge’ to feed. However, they have all progressed well and are at last eating whole herring by themselves. Consequently Angie and Clarisse quickly moved outside to the adult seal pools and are holding their own amongst the other seals (just!). Clarisse like many of the grey seal pups that come to us, was one whose mother had done her bit and when the pup came to looking after itself found life too hard. Clarisse was found exhausted and hungry on a beach near Thurso. She is a very beautiful silver seal with fawn markings. Her nature is quiet and gentle and her best friend is certainly Angie. They spend hours following each other and playing tag. Update 5th April 2005 Clarisse was released back into wild along with Angie and Lenny on 30 March 2005. These three amigos had to make a mammoth return journey back to Thurso for their release at Dunnett Bay beach. The animal care team made the first leg of the journey to Inverness where they were met by British Diver Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) to complete the adventure north. Clarisse flourished in the outdoor pools and gained weight steadily. She got on well with all her pool mates but remained fairly independent. She was a bit of a poser and this was justified due to her good looks and glossy silver coat. |
