Brotchen and Marmalade arrived on 4th June 2006

These two little girls were found at Castle Stalker on the 4th of June 2006. A member of the public spotted them and after having visited us knew not to approach them and to contact us. It is thought that they were playing together and lost their mothers. The pups are nearly identical and very closely bonded. When they were both little they used to try to suckle off each other! When they came to the Sanctuary, Brotchen weighed 8kg and Marmalade was 7.4kg, after the initial assessment, it was found that they had no injuries, underweight and approximately 6 days old. They were named by our German volunteer, Franzi, Brotchen means Roll in German. Brotchen wasn´t too keen being hand fed fish but once she was in the Weaning Pool, she came on leaps and bounds and has now caught up with Marmalade.
UPDATE: October 2006
They are now both outside and got weighed on the 17th October 2006. Brotchen is now 24kg and Marmalade is 31kg, if all goes well over the next few weeks, they should be getting released early to mid November 2006.
UPDATE: 6th November 2006
Marmalade was the biggest pup to be released weighing in at 33 kilograms. She was quite a weight for our releasing team to be carrying on a beach. On being taken out of the travel box Marmalade seemed unsure as to what to do and looked around for encouragement. She soon saw where the other pups were and went swimming up to them. Marmalade was released back into the wild on 1st of November 2006 with Toast, Bagel, Beans and Eigg.

We all hope that Brotchen doesn´t miss Marmalade too much as they were very closely bonded! She is doing well and should be released by the end of November 2006; she already weighs 25.5 kilograms so is the biggest of the remaining pups. She is always very playful and enjoys following visitor's hands threw the viewing window.
UPDATE: 7th December 2006 - Brotchen
Brotchen is a very healthy happy little pup and is still putting weight on. She still isn´t quite at the 30kg benchmark we aim to release pups at but very soon will be. A very curious pup she enjoys playing with the visitors at the viewing window. Once when a member of the team here was watching the pups Brotchen was quite happily asleep on her back floating in the pool when General Lee, one of the new Grey Pups swam up under her and pushed her to wake up, at that moment she was a disgruntled pup. How would you be having just been hit to wake up?!
UPDATE: 28th April 2007 - Brotchen
Brotchen along with Creran and Sausage were released back into the wild at the end of March 2007. Brotchen's release weight was 30kg. The release of the three seals went really well with all the seals going into the water shortly after being let out of the transport boxes, they played in the shallows for a while before venturing off into the deeper waters to explore their new home.
