SAGE - Arrived 14/02/03
Sage is a special little pup, having arrived at the centre on Valentines Day after the arduous journey from Orkney. He took over 9 hours in transit, so when Sage first arrived he was placed in a pen and left alone to rest. Sage has had a lot of problems to contend with and so has been kept off our web-site until he was doing better. He has suffered from a broken flipper joint, an ulcerated eye, lungworm, gutworm and seal pox. All of these maladies have now been dealt with and he is a far fatter, stronger pup. Sage, a rescued grey seal pup
Sage is an unusually coloured grey seal being almost black with lots of gold spots on his coat. This is quite a common coloration for northern seals but has not been seen at the centre for several years. Sage was a bit skinny on arrival with a weight of 17kg at 2 months old. He is now over 35kg and will continue to gain weight rapidly. In the hospital pens he has been a pain to catch although he was quiet when caught. He rolls onto his back so we can´t cover his head with a towel, which is essential when dealing with those teeth! Eventually we would win but not before Sage led us on a merry dance around the pen. He is now in the weaning pool following Chilli and Pepper´s release and is still trying to get used to the water. He is already feeding which shows he is a very quick learner.
UPDATE 8th June 2003
We have finally been able to release Sage. After very difficult beginnings and then a positive PDV result it seemed he would never be fit and healthy. After a brief time in our outdoor pools we decided that all his ailments, including the broken flipper, were fully healed.
So on the 28th of May we drove him to Arisaig and sent him on his way. As expected Sage did not seem fazed by the wide open space and was soon out and swimming.
