| JASMINE (Arrived 30/11/02 - Released 12/02/03) | |
| Jasmine was also brought to the centre from Alastair Jack in Thurso. She was rescued by him on the 11th of November after being spotted for three consecutive days in Harrow harbour, next to the Castle of Mey. There were no obvious injuries but she was very thin and small. She weighed only 12kg despite being two weeks old. |
|
| She is now progressing well and is a fairly docile and agreeable pup. She has fully moulted to her adult coat and is a really beautiful seal. She is the only one of this new batch to eat fish from the bottom of her pen. She hasn’t quite got the knack of eating them whole yet, but that should hopefully come soon. She is already having daily dips in the weaning pool. | |
| UPDATE 19th January 2003 | |
| Jasmine arrived at the sanctuary at the same time as Chilli and Pepper but was an older pup. She soon moved to the weaning pool full time and began feeding on fish simply thrown into the water. Despite arriving with the two boys, Jasmine’s blood tests showed that the PDV seal virus was not present. This made things very difficult in the hospital since we had to do our best to isolate Jasmine and prevent her catching the potentially deadly virus.
Luckily it seems that our efforts managed to prevent Jasmine from becoming ill. She has progressed very well and is putting weight on quickly. She now weighs around 34kg. It will not be long till she can be released and it is likely that she and Vanilla will leave us at the same time. That will be a novelty since she has not seen another seal in weeks. | |
| UPDATE 15th February 2003 | |
| Jasmine had reached a weight of 53 kg in the weaning pool and her blood profile showed she was in perfect health, meaning she was ready for release. So on the 12th of February she travelled 2 ½ hours with Vanilla to Arisaig near Mallaig.
As Jasmine was released she saw Vanilla, the first seal she had been in contact with since her arrival at the centre 2 ½ months ago. Jasmine was slightly reluctant to leave us but when we moved near to her for photos she would move to a safe distance, not keen to be caught again either. Eventually she grew in confidence and swam to catch up with Vanilla. |
