| GALADRIEL - RESCUED 07/07/02 | |
| Galadriel (right in the photo) was spotted by a family on holiday near Pennyghael on Mull. As she was also very underweight she was brought to the ferry at Craignure by the family and collected at Oban by the Sanctuary team.
Galadriel was about 10 days old, and weighed 6.4kg, she was so weak that bluebottles had laid eggs all over her fur, even in her ears. Once she arrived at the hospital, she was cleaned up and was immediately given fluids, antibiotics and vitamins. Like Arwen, she will be weaned from milk to fish once she is two weeks old. |
| We believe that Galadriel and Arwen may actually be twins. This is because they are both the same age and size, they have similar markings and they were found in the same area. It is unusual for a seal to have twins and a female would have been unable to suckle two pups as she would not have had enough reserves. If they are twins, the mother may have abandoned both of them because they were smaller than usual or because she knew she could not cope with two pups. | |
| UPDATE - 04-08-02
Unfortunately Galadriel died on Friday. She was checked on at midday and seemed to be fine and then at 1pm she was discovered dead and seemed to have passed away quietly. We had tried everything to get some weight onto her but she was so small and thin, we could not get enough food into her as she was just too weak. | |
