FRODO - RESCUED 21st June 2002
Frodo arrived at the Sanctuary on the 21st of June, he was about 2 days old, and weighed 9.3kg. He was discovered hauled out on a fish farm cage just off Lismore. As there was no sign of any adult seals all day it was decided that he must have been abandoned and was brought over to Oban by boat and then collected by the animal care team and brought swiftly back to the sanctuary.
Apart from being thin and malnourished Frodo is pretty healthy with no injuries or infections. He has been given a course of antibiotics and vitamins and his blood results have come back all clear.
Frodo, our first rescued pup of the season
In the wild Frodo would still be suckling from his mother at this stage, so we are currently feeding him Multimilk, a special milk formula that is a good substitute for his mother’s milk. Once Frodo is 2 weeks old we will start to wean him onto fish, as this is naturally the stage at which he would begin separating from his mother and catching fish himself.
UPDATE 6th September 2002
Frodo has been in the weaning pool for around 2 weeks now and is doing well. He is not quite as far along as Elwyn as he is not readily taking his herring from the bottom of the pool. He will need to become proficient at this before moving to the outdoor pools. Otherwise Frodo is doing well.
A real cheeky character, Frodo is very playful now he’s in the pool.
UPDATE 12th November 2002
Frodo is loving life in the outdoor pools. He moved outside soon after Elwyn and gets along well with all the adults. He is most commonly seen swimming upside down. This makes identifying him all the easier for us as his tummy is still a little green! He is now a very good weight at around 30kg. All he needs to do is gain a little more weight before he’s ready for release.
