ELWYN - RESCUED 3rd July 2002
Elwyn was spotted hauled out on a beach at Westport on her own. After being watched for 1½ days and no adult seals seen, she was rescued by local vet Susan Maxwell.
Susan cared for Elwyn overnight before bringing her to the sanctuary the following day.
Elwyn was about 1 week old, and weighed 9kg, like our other pups, she was also malnourished and dehydrated on arrival, and will be given fluids and antibiotics before being tube fed milk.
Elwyn, arescued pup
UPDATE 6th September 2002
Elwyn has gone from strength to strength since she arrived with us. She is now fully weaned onto whole herring and has put on a great deal of weight at over 24 kilos. She has just reached the stage where she´s ready to join our resident seals in the outdoor pools. Before she moves we will tag her flipper in preparation for her release.
Once Elwyn gains another 15 kilos or more she will be ready for release. We will all be sad to see her go as she is a very gentle, loveable pup.
UPDATE 12th November 2002
Elwyn was the first of our common seals to move into the outdoor pools. Despite a nervous start she was soon swimming around as though she owned the pools. All the seals loved having her around, particularly Atlanta, the blind Grey seal pup. They were soon joined by many of the other pups but Elwyn has remained bossy at meal times and a very large pup. She is now around 30kg and will soon reach release weight.
