ARWEN - RESCUED 05/07/02
Arwen and Galadriel, rescued pups Arwen (left in the photo) was first spotted four days before we received a call about her. It was clear from the callers description that she was very underweight and needed to be rescued urgently. We contacted the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust, based at Tobermory on Mull who collected the pup from Pennyghael and brought her to Craignure where she was transported to Oban on the ferry and collected by the animal care team.
Arwen was about 1 week old, and despite being the thinnest pup we have ever seen, 3 kg less than birth weight, was surprisingly lively, we immediately treated her with emergency fluids, antibiotics and vitamins. She will now be fed on milk for a week before being weaned onto fish.
UPDATE 6th September 2002
Arwen has come on in leaps and bounds since she was weaned onto fish. She is a very feisty pup and has fought through to reach a healthy 17 kilos. A slight ear infection is the only problem still affecting Arwen, but a short course of ear drops should clear that up.
In the next few days she is likely to go into the weaning pool full time, but for the moment has been having a daily swim with Aragorn.
Arwen, looking better
UPDATE 12th November 2002
Arwen was a very quick learner once she was allowed into the weaning pool full time, and was soon moved to the outdoor pools. She has had a few more problems with her ear since being moved and received a daily treatment by hand feeding her antibiotics. The infection has now cleared up again and hopefully wont flare up again. Otherwise Arwen is doing very well. She always makes her presence felt at the feeds and is growing lovely and plump. She is easily identifiable even in the large pools by the large area of golden fur around the sides of her neck.
