ARAGORN - RESCUED 9 JULY 2002
Aragorn, a rescued pup Aragorn was picked up off the beach by a family at South Ronachan who then tried to look after him for a few days themselves before finally contacting the SSPCA for help.
Seals are wild animals and should not be handled unless absolutely necessary. Seal pups can often be abandoned due to public interference and need very specialist care once rescued. Aragorn was about 1 week old, and weighed 8.3kg, when he was brought to the sanctuary by the SSPCA. We are treating him with antibiotics and he is being fed on a special milk diet.
Aragorn is still pretty quiet and weak but should start to improve once he has started to put on some weight.
UPDATE 6th September 2002
Aragorn has become far livelier as he has increased in weight and becomes healthier. When it´s feeding time he likes to let us know he is hungry by tapping insistently on the glass of his pen. He now weighs around 20 kilos and will move into the weaning pool very soon.
At the moment he is going for a swim each day after lunch so he can become accustomed to the water, it seems this is his favourite part of the day.
UPDATE 12th November 2002
Aragorn surprised us all with the speed at which he learned to eat in the weaning pool. He was never very good at hand feeding and was very slow to learn that biting the fish simply turns it to mush. In the pool however, he quickly mastered the floating fish. Now he’s in the outdoor pools he is more allusive than ever. He is a very gentle mannered pup, getting along with all of the others very well. He is gaining weight fast and looks very healthy. He will reach release weight fairly soon.
