"Sanctuary stories" for August 2011
Over the last month Dennis and the displays team here at the Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary have rescued 3 abandoned common seals from within the Argyll area. The Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary works alongside the SSPCA in rescuing abandoned seals.

Strip the Willow Strip the Willow

The Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary mascot´s "Shaky the Shark" and "Selkie the Seal" along with more than 2000 dancers lined the street to clinch the world record for performing the biggest Strip the Willow in history.

Oban, with a population of 8,500, stole the crown from the previous world record holders, Edinburgh, who had attracted 1917 dancers.

Helping Hands...
Over the last 2 months the staff at the Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary have been actively raising money through various activities to help to very worthwhile charities close to their hearts.

A variety of fundraising activities have been taking place from a Grand Raffle and Car Boot Sale to home baked Scones and facepainting.

So far they have raised a grand total of £2,700 and still going strong.
Helping Hands
Merlin´s Magic Wand is a worldwide charity for children, aiming to provide magical experiences for those who are ill, disabled or disadvantaged.

Turtle Sanctuary Endangered Loggerhead turtles gather in Zakynthos every year to breed, where they face many deadly dangers. We are working alongside NGO group EARTH, SEA & Sky to build a turtle rescue hospital for injured Loggerhead Turtles.

Walk for Whales
We would like to thank everybody who joined us in the Walk for Whales, we hope you all had a fantastic day.

In partnership with the WDCS (Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society) staff and friends of the Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary took part in a family fun 2.5 mile walk to show awareness and help stop whaling.

Over £600 was raised on the day.
Walk for Whales
The ban on commercial whaling is one of the greatest conservation victories of all time. Before it became law in 1986, whaling had brought entire species to the brink of extinction.
