NARLA - Rescued on 14th October 2006

On Saturday 14th of October 2006, the Sanctuary received a call about a baby seal at Swanage beach near Weymouth. After a few hours and with no sign of mum returning, it was decided that the pup would need picking up and bringing to Gweek. The long journey to Gweek took five hours and when the pup arrived it was very quiet and weighed just 12 kilos. We have called the pup ´NARLA´, and was estimated to be around 3 - 4 days old, there is no wounds to her body but she does still have a little bit of her umbilical cord left, which was sprayed with antibiotics. Narla was given fluids for the first 24 hours and then progressed on to milk. By Monday (16th of October) Narla had started to moult quiet heavily and so this leaves us to believe that she is a little older then we first thought, and we think she may be around 2 - 2½ weeks old. Narla also has a heat lamp on, but continues to do well.
Hospital update: 27th October 2006 - Narla is still receiving milk every 4 hours and is starting to put on weight; she now weighs 12.5 kilos, and due to start on fish next week. Narla was in isolation 1 but has now been moved to the temporary pen in the hospital.
She has the biggest eyes of all our pups and large front flippers (hopefully she will grow in to them).
