MAGNET - Rescued on 7th October 2006

Magnet in the isolation pen in the hospital - photo was taken on 9th October 2006 by Rachael VineThe Sanctuary received a phone call on Saturday night (7th of October 2006) around 7pm from a gentleman concerned about a seal on the beach near Port Isaac in north Cornwall. Abi on duty that evening called one of the many volunteers that help the Sanctuary during pup season, who went and checked out the report of the pup. After finding the pup, its initial condition looked to be malnourished with some kind of injury to its front flipper.
With the help of Dave from BDMLR, the seal was brought back to Gweek around midnight and put into isolation 2. We examined the seal to find it was a little girl, and round 3 weeks old. She weighed 12.5 kilos and was malnourished with a suspected broken front left flipper, this to be confirmed by our vet and an x-ray. ‘Magnet’ was given fluids for the first 24 hours, and on Monday (9th of October 2006) was given fish soup. By the afternoon Magnet was given whole fish and seems to be doing very well on it. She is also on a course of antibiotics, anti-inflamitories, pain relief, vitamins and iron tablets.Magnet in the isolation pen in the hospital - photo was taken on 9th October 2006 by Rachael Vine

Update: 13th May 2007 - With the tides right on the morning of Tuesday 8th of May 2007, we decided it was time to release a few more seals back into the wild. At 8am, we loaded up Magnet along with Rimmer, Flik, Smurf, Chip and Pudey and took them for the 10 minute drive to the release site. The surf was a little higher than we expected, but the excitement coming from the seals in the trailer meant it was time to say goodbye. We lowered the trailer door down and with little hesitation, the open sea called and they were off flopping down the beach and into the water.
